Is Black Seed Oil Anti-Aging? The Evidence!

Is Black Seed Oil Anti-Aging? The Evidence!

Black seed oil is an extraordinary plant also called Nigella Sativa. The oil extracted from this plant has been used for millennia as a medicinal aid for many ailments and diseases and has a legendary reputation for being able to cure almost everything. As legend has it, the Prophet Muhammad said that “it can cure everything except death.” But, is black seed oil anti-aging?

There are numerous factors that define what anti-aging is and black seed oil (BSO) fulfills them all and much more. BSO can add many healthy years to your life. Read on and find out how.

Is Black Seed Oil Anti-Aging?

When it comes to anti-aging, indications of aging as well as age-related signs and diseases are to be cured, avoided, or relieved through prevention, early detection, treatment, and reversal.

Anti-aging medicines are based on scientific study and research, and medical technology. Also, the cosmetics industry uses the term anti-aging for marketing exclusive anti-aging products for skin, hair, teeth, etc.

The study and research of anti-aging medicine are not that old. In 1993, two US doctors, Robert M. Goldman and Ronald Klatz announced the term “anti-aging” at a medical conference about the difficulties of having a high-quality life in people’s later years. They also created the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) in that same year.

The two primary purposes of anti-aging are:

  • To maintain and increase both mental and physical health into old age.
  • To make the tell-tale signs of aging less noticeable.

study published on February 1, 2020, states that there is such a worldwide urgency for anti-aging that guidelines, policies, and actions need to be taken.

As such, The Executive Committee on Anti-aging and Disease Prevention was created to promote anti-aging-related issues worldwide.

The factors that define “anti-aging” include ways to increase mental and physical health into old age and to make the physical signs of aging less noticeable. BSO appears to satisfy all of them. Here is how.

Is Black Seed Oil Anti-Aging?

Chronic low-grade inflammation (also known as inflammaging) plays a significant role in the aging process. So, if inflammaging can be subdued, it may slow down aging.

recent study, published in February 2019, confirms that black seed oil is, in fact, anti-inflammatory. The compounds found in the oil significantly decreased Interleukin-6.

Interleukin-6 is a chemical that is capable of wreaking havoc on inflammation if it begins working erratically, possibly helping cause numerous diseases. Short-term, it defends the body by messaging the immune system to where the problems may be located.

A scientific review on Nigella Sativa broke down the potent medicinal benefits it can provide.

The review listed the medicinal powers it has against many serious diseases and ailments, which includes supporting the immune system.

The immune system is a significant component of anti-aging research. Common sense would dictate that if you have a strong and healthy immune system in your later years, it will prolong your life dramatically.

BSO is so potent that it can almost be considered an immune system in itself. Does anyone know of any other medicine, herb, substance, or supplement that has been scientifically proven to fight almost all the major diseases, bacterias, fungi, and viruses known to man? And without or extremely minimal side effects?

Another significant component of anti-aging research is to maintain youthful skin. Does BSO oil help in this department? Let’s look at the evidence.

According to a scientific review published on November 22, 2017, on BSO’s potential cosmeceutical (a cosmetic that has medicinal attributes) and external uses on the body, it confirmed that it is beneficial for numerous skin disorders and conditions, such as:

  • Acne
  • Wounds
  • All type of skin inflammations
  • Psoriasis
  • Vitiligo (A skin pigmentation disorder)
  • Protects you from the sun’s rays

Another report, published by the Journal of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery, stated that Nigella Sativa inhibited skin cancers in mice.

This report also mentioned the discovered cosmetic applications of Nigella Sativa:

  • It notably reduced skin irritations
  • Enhanced skin hydration
  • Potential anti-aging and moisturizing effects

Another major part of aging is the decrease in brain function, such as loss of memory and learning abilities.

A scientific paper published in February 2016 demonstrated that black seed oil and its components could and do improve memory and the ability to learn.

By definition, besides all its other superb medicinal powers, this also puts black seed in the “nootropic” category, a brain booster. (See my definition of “nootropic” in a prior article I wrote on another powerful herb called Schisandra).

Studies conducted on humans with Nigella Sativa showed its nootropic abilities to improve memory, attention span, mood, and decrease anxiety.

How Does BLACK SEED OIL Boost Brain Function?

BSO contains a substance called “thymoquinone.” It is the main compound found in black seeds and makes up 30 to 48% out of all the elements found in the oil.

Thymoquinone is the primary factor that gives BSO its medicinal and cognitive boosting powers. There are 100’s of other essential compounds and nutrients found in BSO, but thymoquinone is its king.

However, according to the scientific review, when it comes to boosting cognitive function, there are several other compounds in black seed that may play a part, such as thymol, carvacrol, and many of its flavonoids.

Is Black Seed Oil Anti-Aging? The Evidence!

An interesting study conducted on mice showed the anti-aging potential of BSO.

Scientists gave mice a substance called “d-galactose.” This natural substance, which is found in the human body, has been shown to speed up the aging process in animal studies when they are overloaded with it.

They then gave the mice black seed oil. The results showed that the oil produced an “anti-aging effect” in the mice that were given the d-galactose.

An intriguing study showed that thymoquinone (the major constituent in BSO), can:

  • activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK),
  • activate silent mating-type information regulator 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1)
  • increase nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)
  • reduce cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS)

In another 2017 study involving neuroinflammation, scientists wanted to know the mechanism behind thymoquinone’s (TQ) success in fighting this type of inflammation. The results again showed that TQ’s success was due to its ability to activate AMPK and SIRT1, increase NAD+, and reduce ROS.

All four of the above processes are significantly associated with slowing down aging. The research shows that thymoquinone can regulate, stimulate, and activate proteins, genes, and processes that inhibit aging and extend lifespan. Here is a brief breakdown of each one.

AMPK is a protein that controls some of the most vital determining factors of aging and lifespan, such as:

  • Cellular homeostasis (regulates cell health by keeping the cells balanced, stable, and optimal, from external or internal stress)
  • Metabolism
  • Resistance to stress
  • Cell survival and growth
  • Cell death
  • Autophagy (is essential for the health of cells because it helps them recycle worn-out or damaged proteins and carbohydrates. It’s also vital for the growth and survival of cells)

According to this study, AMPK activation decreases as we get older, making our bodies more prone to diseases and health problems. Finding ways of increasing AMPK activation may be of significant use as an anti-aging treatment and for increasing lifespan.

Many studies confirm that Nigella Sativa is an AMPK activator, thus making it an anti-aging powerhouse.

SIRT1, also known as the longevity gene, plays a vital role in the aging process, and when activated, studies show that it extends lifespan and health span.

Like AMPK, SIRT1 also decreases as we age, weakening our bodies and making us more vulnerable to diseases and health problems. Finding ways to activate SIRT1 will increase lifespan.

Nigella Sativa can and does activate SIRT1. (1), (2), (3)

NAD+ is a critical molecule and is the backbone of cell regeneration. NAD+ is a molecule in our bodies that declines as we age. Without it in our bodies, we would instantly die.

Its decrease as we age is basically what weakens us, making us more vulnerable to disease and, eventually, death. Extending lifespan and healthspan is highly correlated to stopping the decline of NAD+ levels and, more importantly, increasing it.

Black seed oil and its compounds can increase NAD+ levels. (Source at #7). This other study stated the following:

  • We also investigated the effect of thymoquinone on NAD+/NADH ratio in BV2 microglia, and showed that treatment with the compound resulted in statistically significant (p < 0.01) and concentration-dependent increase in levels of NAD+.”

Black seed oil can increase NAD+ levels, and it can help extend lifespan and health span.

Reduces Cellular ROS

Reactive oxygen species are free radicals derived from oxygen. Scientists believe that we age primarily due to the continuous damage free radicals cause to our cells (Source at #2). It is also known as oxidative stress.

Antioxidants destroy free radicals. However, when there are more free radicals than antioxidants in your body, it causes a build-up of ROS in your cells. This, over time, will speed aging, damage DNA, make you prone to diseases, and eventually kill you.

ROS can infiltrate your body from external sources (e.g., drugs, food, tobacco, water, air pollution). Your body can also create ROS internally from several biological processes. (Source at Figure 1)

Studies have generally shown that if ROS is increased, lifespan is shortened. However, if ROS is reduced, lifespan increases.

Nigella sativa has shown that it can reduce ROS and slow aging in this sense.

Black seed oil is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune system booster. It is also excellent for the skin, improves brain function, and fights almost every disease, bacteria, virus, and fungus.

Is black seed oil anti-aging? There is a lot of evidence to suggest that it is. It meets the criteria to make it an anti-aging powerhouse. As for the two primary factors of anti-aging mentioned earlier, black see oil fulfills both and much more:

  1. It can and does increase mental and physical function at any age, especially old age.
  2. It can make the physical signs of aging less noticeable because it is healthy for the skin and can make it look more youthful.
